RADIANCE series

Luminescent varnishes

The special feature of luminescent varnishes is that they are colourless and invisible in normal light. When illuminated with a UV lamp, however, they glow with bright, brilliant colours.

These invisible varnishes thus provide an ideal solution for product and copy protection, as well as various security solutions. In addition, it can also be a great design element, which gives much more room for creativity than traditional inks.

In our Radiance range you can find the following inks:

  • Radiance Red

  • Radiance Green

  • Radiance Blue

  • Radiance White

  • Radiance Turquoise

  • Radiance Greenish Yellow

  • Radiance Yellow

  • Radiance Orange

Area of use:

Primarily recommended for self-adhesive labels (paper, PE, PP), but can also be used for shrink films (PVC, OPS, PET).

Print properties:

With our products, you can print at a speed of up to 150 m/min, under suitable conditions.

Minimum recommended lamp power: 140 – 160 W/cm

Anilox selection: 6,0 – 10 cm3/m2

General series

UV Flexo Varnishes

UVL Overprint Varnish series

Application Areas

The UVL series of Overprint Varnishes consist of a variety of varnishes for different application areas.

Generally, all of the varnishes are available in silicone-free and siliconed versions. The silicone-free varnishes are overprintable and also may allow printability with thermo transfer ribbons and foil stamping. The versions with added silicone exhibit better substrate wetting, higher gloss, higher resistance and enhanced slip properties, however they are not overprintable, thus recommended only for the top layer.

UVL002 Standard Overprint Varnish without Silicone

UVL003 Standard Overprint Varnish with Silicone

Standard series of a polyether acrylate based varnish, suitable for paper and plastic labels.

Recommended anilox roller: 6-12 cm3/m2 with 160-100 lines/cm.

UVL001 High Gloss Overprint Varnish without Silicone

UVL004 High Gloss Overprint Varnish with Silicone

Epoxy acrylate based varnish, exhibiting higher gloss compared to the standard series. Also suitable for paper and plastic labels.

Recommended anilox roller: 6-12 cm3/m2 with 160-100 lines/cm.

UVL024 Low Migration Overprint Varnish without Silicone

UVL029 Low Migration Overprint Varnish with Silicone

Low migration overprint varnish for indirect food packaging applications, formulated with high functional monomers and polymeric photoinitiators.

Suitable for printing the non-food contact side of paper and plastic packaging materials.

Recommended anilox roller: 6-12 cm3/m2 with 160-100 lines/cm.

UVL014 Release Varnish

UVL022 Low Migration Release Varnish

Standard and low migration/low odor version of a release varnish, with excellent release properties even for prolonged time, designed for making booklet labels.

Suitable for paper and plastic labels, especially for labels with hot melt adhesives (e.g. UPM Raflatac RH09).

Special care must be taken with paper labels with acrylic adhesive (e.g. UPM Raflatac RP37 or RP51), since these types of adhesives tend to migrate through the release layer. Prior printing tests and at least three weeks of waiting are necessary to see the suitability of the release varnish for such labels.

For paper and film labels high volume anilox roller is recommended: 10-14 cm3/m2 with 120-90 lines/cm.

UVL028 Low Migration Matte Overprint Varnish

Matte overprint varnish, suitable for paper and plastic labels, overprintable.

Recommended anilox roller: 10-12 cm3/m2 with 120-100 lines/cm.

UVL027 Texture Overprint Varnish with Paper Feel

Matte overprint varnish with coarse particles to provide a paper feel effect on plastic films.

Suitable anilox roller: 18-21 cm3/m2. An anilox with channel engraving is highly recommended, but a conventional closed cell anilox is also suitable as well. Anilox rollers with cell opening smaller than 50 microns are to be avoided, because the large particles may stick into the cells of the anilox roller.

The coarse particles tend to settle in the container over time, so strong mixing is necessary before printing.

Printing Properties

Pre-treatment: for plastic films, a corona pre-treatment of at least 38-44 mN/m is recommended.

Printing speed: up to 150 m/min (dependent on UV lamps and printing machine geometry).

Minimum recommended lamp power: 120 W/cm

Anilox selection: 6-12 cm3/m2 with 160-100 lines/cm

Prior tests are recommended to determine the optimal anilox volume for the desired properties.

Printing plate type: all printing plate types or rubber rollers developed for the usage of free radical curing UV inks can be used.

Cleaning: recommended cleaning solvents are methoxy propanol or ethoxy propanol, but any cleaning fluid for UV flexo inks could be suitable. Ethyl acetate is not recommended for cleaning the printing plates. Follow the advice of the printing plate manufacturer for suitable solvents.

Cationic series for sausage casing printing

UVFCAT Cationic Flexo inks

The UVFCAT flexographic UV curing inks are specially designed for printing of polyamide sausage casings. They are 100 % cationic systems , ensuring good gloss, excellent adhesion, shirring and hot water resistance.

Area of use::

Outside printing of polyamide casings for food packaging, where the casing has to withstand shirring and cooking at elevated temperatures and pressure. Due to the variety of substrate materials, prior testing of printability and end use properties is recommended.

Print properties:

Printing speed: up to 100 m/min, dependent on UV lamps and printing machine geometry.

Minimum recommended lamp power: 160 W/cm, medium pressure mercury lamp.

Anilox selection:

  • Process colours 4,5-6 cm3/m2 with 300-280 lines/cm
  • Basic colours 7-8 cm3/m2 with 220-180 lines/cm
  • Strong basic colours up to 10 cm3/m2 120 lines/cm
  • White inks: up to 12 cm3/m2 with 80 lines/cm

Instructions for use

Maintain air humidity and temperature between the optimal points. Too high air humidity will decrease curing speed considerably.

Avoid cross contamination with radically curing UV inks, as well amines and basic materials. Processing additives with basic characteristics in the substrate can also negatively influence curing.

Cationic inks are touch safe and rub resistant immediately after irradiation with UV light, however the crosslinking process continues even in the absence of light and it reaches its final strength and adhesion after 24 hours. Shirring is recommended only after this period.

Additives, Others

Additives

  • Transparent White: Pigmentless ink vehicle for dilution of the inks, used to decrease the colour strength. Usable in any ratio from 1% to 99%. To achieve a perceivable colour strength decrease, an addition of 5-10% is needed. Unlike an overprint varnish, Transparent White contains photoinitiators for both surface and deep cure, so curing properties are unaffected even at higher dosage.
  • Antifoam: Additive for deaerating and decreasing foam building. Recommended dosage is 0,2-0,5% in case of foam buildup.
  • Wetting agent: Additive to decrease the surface tension of the ink. In case of small dosage (0,1-0,2%) it improves the wetting of the substrate, also makes a rastered print smoother, and the print remains overprintable. In case of larger dosage (0,2-1%) it also increases the surface slip, but overprintability may be problematic. Note that the wetting agent may improve the wetting, but it doesn’t improve the adhesion.

Primer varnishes

  • UV Primer: Standard UV curing primer varnish for enhancing adhesion of printing inks on corona treated polymer films like PET, PP, PE.
